Antique Blue Willow Transferware Platter | c. 19th–Early 20th Century

A beautifully timeworn piece of blue-and-white transferware, made even better by the evidence of its long life.

This large antique Blue Willow–style platter features the familiar landscape that has made blue-and-white transferware so enduring: pagodas, bridges, figures, boats, trees, birds, and distant mountains rendered in intricate cobalt blue against a warm ivory ground. An elaborate geometric and floral border surrounds the central scene, giving the platter a particularly strong decorative presence.

What we love most, though, is the surface. Years of age have created beautiful overall crazing and warm tonal variation, softening the once-crisp white ground and giving the platter the depth that only genuinely old ceramics develop over time.

At approximately 16" × 13", it is substantial enough to become an anchor in a collection. Display it upright on a hutch or open shelf, lean it against the backsplash in a kitchen, or layer it among other blue-and-white pieces for a collected arrangement.

This is an antique piece and does have a visible crack on the reverse. We consider the platter best suited for decorative display rather than food service. The crack, crazing, discoloration, and other age-related imperfections are reflected in the condition and are part of the piece's history and character.
