Description

A remarkable petite pair of antique French maritime engravings, imported from France and depicting two historic ports along the French coast. Delicately detailed and softly colored, each scene captures the activity of harbor life—sailing vessels on the water, figures along the shore, distant architecture, and beautifully rendered coastal landscapes.

The pair includes Le Port des Sables d'Olonne, Vu de la Chaume and Le Port de Camaret, Vu du côté du Sud, compositions associated with the late-18th-century Nouvelles vues perspectives des ports de France series.

The Camaret composition is associated with the work of Nicolas-Marie Ozanne, while the Sables-d'Olonne view is associated with Lomet; both were published within the celebrated French tradition of engraved port views. Their subject matter, petite scale, and visible age give them the wonderful feeling of pieces collected on travels and carried home.

Each engraving is presented beneath glass in a coordinating antiqued gold-tone frame with delicate beaded detailing. At only about 5 inches wide, they are especially good for those small spaces where finding the right artwork can be difficult.

Display them together, tuck them into a collected gallery wall, or layer them alongside larger paintings and drawings for an unexpected bit of French maritime history.

Condition

These are genuine antique works and show visible foxing, toning, discoloration, and other age-related variation to the paper and frames. We have intentionally preserved these signs of age, which contribute considerably to the character of the pair.

A Note on Age & Attribution

The compositions originate with the late-18th-century French Ports de France project. Because these particular examples remain framed, we have not examined the paper, plate marks, or reverse and therefore cannot guarantee a specific printing date or edition. They are being offered as antique engravings based on their appearance and sourcing rather than as authenticated 18th-century impressions.

Styling Notes

Their tiny scale is what makes these so good. Hang the pair vertically in a narrow spot, place them side by side above a stack of books, or work them into a gallery wall among larger oil paintings, landscapes, sketches, and antique portraits.

The aged paper and petite gold frames bring exactly the sort of variation that makes a collection of artwork feel gathered rather than decorated.
