Antique French Standing Crucifix with Skull & Crossbones | 12.9"
Description
A striking French devotional object rich with age, symbolism, and old-world character.
Sourced in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, this antique standing crucifix combines a slender ebonized wood cross with a stepped pedestal base and detailed metal figure of Christ. Its dark finish, traditional proportions, and aged metalwork give the piece the sculptural presence characteristic of antique European devotional objects.
At the foot of the cross rests a particularly compelling skull and crossbones motif. In traditional Christian Crucifixion imagery, the skull references Golgotha—“the place of the skull”—as well as the longstanding tradition that Adam was buried beneath the site of Christ’s Crucifixion. Within this context, the imagery becomes a symbol not simply of mortality, but of Christ’s triumph over death.
Traditional disc-and-ball terminals finish the ends of the cross, while the turned pedestal allows the crucifix to stand independently. At nearly 13 inches tall, it has enough presence to become a focal point on a mantel, console, bookshelf, or bedside table.
The piece displays considerable evidence of its age, including a crack and small loss to the pedestal and an incomplete crossbones motif. These details have been left untouched. Rather than diminishing the piece, we think they contribute to the unmistakable character of an object that has survived generations of use and devotion.

The piece has been left in its found condition, preserving the evidence of its previous life rather than attempting to make an antique object appear new.

Styling Notes
Give this one room to be appreciated. Its freestanding design makes it particularly beautiful on a mantel, library shelf, writing desk, or console, where the small details can be viewed up close.
Layer it among old books, antique religious art, brass objects, and other pieces with personal meaning—or allow the dark silhouette to stand quietly on its own.
