Vintage 1940s French White Plaster Crucifix | 9.37"

Quietly beautiful and wonderfully timeworn, this vintage French plaster crucifix dates to approximately the 1940s and carries the softened character that only decades of age can create.

Molded entirely in plaster or chalkware, the crucifix features a sculptural figure of Christ rendered in the same warm ivory-white palette as the cross itself. The monochromatic treatment gives the traditional religious form an almost architectural quality, allowing the modeling and shadows to provide the detail rather than contrasting materials or color.

Look closely and you'll find beautifully rendered details throughout, from the crown of thorns and draped cloth to the raised INRI banner above. What was likely once a brighter white has naturally mellowed into warm ivory, with areas of discoloration, patina, surface variation, and wear that give the piece its distinctive appearance.

Originally sourced in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, the crucifix is stamped “FRANCE” on the underside and retains its metal hanging loop.

At just over nine inches tall, it is particularly lovely tucked into a collected gallery wall, displayed alongside antique religious art, or hung alone in a quiet corner of the home.
